Side Effects of Consuming excess Cabbage

Can cause excessive flatulence

Eating cabbage can be beneficial for digestion. The dietary fibres assist in the smooth excretion of stool. However, overeating cabbage can cause irritable bowel syndrome. Cabbage contains raffinose which is an indigestible fibre. The insoluble fibre leads to belching, excess gas, bloating and abdominal discomfort.

You can end up with Severe Diarrhea

One cup of cabbage contains 5.8grams of dietary fibres. The insoluble fibres in cabbage can cause difficulties in the digestion of food.  The indigestible fibre can end up blocking the intestines and causing diarrhoea. Cancer patients are often advised not to eat cabbages since it may end up worsening chemotherapy.

Can cause Hypothyroidism

Individuals with iodine deficiency should stay away from eating cabbages. Cabbages are beneficial to people with high level of sugar, but if one exceeds the consumption, it can lead to goitre or iodine deficiency. Eating cabbage is okay, but too much is not.

Taking cabbage when Breastfeeding or pregnant can be risky

Cabbage can interfere with blood surgery levels in our bodies during surgery. It is therefore important to stop eating cabbages at least two weeks before the surgery.
