Manchester United’s 3-0 home loss to Tottenham on Monday was Jose Mourinho’s biggest home defeat in his trophy-laden career.
Given Mourinho’s history of imploding in his third season during his time at Chelsea, Real Madrid, and during his second spell at Chelsea; the embarrassing loss could be the beginning of his end at Manchester United.
Mourinho has seemingly soured his relationship with Paul Pogba. He has also had to defend his relationship with Manchester United CEO Ed Woodward.
So, if the fiery Portuguese gets the sack, who are the top candidates who could replace him?
1 Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham Hotspurs counterpart Mauritio Ponchettino
2 Zinedine Zidane
Three consecutive Champions League triumphs with Real Madrid have prompted bookies to place the French World Cup winner at the top of potential candidates to replace Mourinho at United.
If he does take over the job, he would inherit a squad in crisis; Just like when he replaced Rafa Benitez at Real Madrid.
He will also want to prove that his incredible feat at the Madrid club was not a fluke, which makes the Old Trafford club an exciting challenge for him.
3 Antonio Conte
If Manchester United are looking for short-term success, Conte fits the bill.
During his first season at Chelsea, he led the club from a dismal 10th place finish in the league to the title. Despite winning the FA Cup trophy, his second season in charge proved to be a disaster.
He seemingly lost the trust and the confidence of his players, and eventually got the sack.
4 Mauritio Ponchettino
Ponchettino on Monday taught his friend and idol, Jose Mourinho, a footballing lesson.
He has made Tottenham Hotspurs regular participants in the Champions League. This he has achieved with relatively limited transfer funds. His team place attacking football, which ticks a box with Manchester United Fans.
Trophies are yet to come for the young manager, but he could well achieve that at Manchester United.
5 Diego Simeone
Simeone has enjoyed roaring success at Atletico Madrid. He recently signed a long-term contract at the club, which would make it pretty hard for Manchester United to acquire his services.
Still, he would be the ideal candidate to replace Mourinho. Despite having considerably fewer finances than rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid, Simeone has managed to win a league title, and lead his team to two UCL finals.
He also lifted last season’s Europa League title.
